i should have got back to this earlier...

i think the biblical issue is actually more an issue about how people read/view/understand the bible, but it still doesnt cease it from being a discrimination issue.

Darren, I would say that the homosexuality issue is primarily a biblical issue, not a discrimination issue.

just a couple of comments...
a) "one of the major denominations recently decided to ordain practicing homosexuals"
as member of tht denomination (i think anyway) ive got to say the decision wasn't to allow the ordination of homosexuals, as that was already possible under our system, instead the decision was to allow some churches the ability to not call someone on the basis of how that person lives out their sexuality (ie are they living in a same sex rship...). But I can see how it can be understood as us allowing the ordination of queer people, but we, like the Anglicans and Catholics have been doing that for many many years... just not admitting it.

that being said im not sure if sexuality is such a big issue in (my) youth ministry, ive always had bi, bi-curious, gay, lesbian young people involved in my church youth groups as participants and members, and we've never made it an issue. to most of the young people in the group this was a no brainer, not an issue at all for their friendships, or faith.

I guess it is an issue if churches continue to isolate people of gbltg backgrounds as I doubt young people will stand for it nowdays and will call it discrimination out and out.

i wonder if its more of an issue for some churches than others though...

b) the stats in the Youth Specialties article is primarily American. Youth Ministry placements in my church are supposed to last for 3 years, however there aren't that many of us in Full Time ministry, instead it seems that 18 months is probably more real here in Australia. I've been in youth ministry for about 12 years and have had 2 years part time in high school chaplaincy, 3 one year positions in different churches, 1 1.5 year position doing a regional ministry, one 2 year position that then lead into a 2 year position working in youth work for the local government (4 years in one place but 2 positions) and I'm just about to finish a 3 year regional position.

I know of way too many short term, part time positions here in Australia, so its sill a huge issue.

i have recently heard that the 18 months in on position is an old stat. I think I read in group magazine that the average now is around 4 years.
