I got this idea from the current issue of Group Magazine. Since most of my youth group kids are on AIM and use cell phones as a primary means of communication, it seems to make sense to utilize these tools for communicating youth group news and announcements. Students can easily check away messages and profile info on AIM for youth group updates and AIM allows sending text messages to cell phones straight from the buddy list. Click the image below to see an enlarged version of the note card I plan to pass out to the kids explaining the utilization of AIM and cell phones for youth group announcements.

Under Buddy List Setup in AIM, use the option to add a mobile number. Type in the cell number of person you want and it adds them to your list as a normal buddy. Just send the mobile buddy an IM the way you would a normal buddy and it sends the message to their cell phone as a text message. Copy the announcement and paste it as an IM to the next student on the list. They can reply back with a text message, as well, if they want.
If you have 100 students to text message, then you’ll probably wanna look into a service that sends messages to a group of people. I think ICQ’s SMS service handles this, but I’m not sure.
Does that answer your question?
